What you are watching
After a car accident, a young woman takes work as an organist in another town. Ordinary encounters become unsettling, and an abandoned lakeside pavilion keeps drawing her attention. Herk Harvey’s 1962 film follows a person trying to return to everyday life while the people and places around her seem increasingly unfamiliar.
Choose this for an uncanny atmosphere rather than a constant succession of shocks. Candace Hilligoss gives Mary’s uncertainty a center, while the organ music makes spaces feel less welcoming. The film rewards a quiet room and attention to sound. Its car accident, threatening appearances and sustained anxiety can still disturb viewers despite the restrained visual violence.
